Haeundae beach
Once known only for its hot springs, the narrow strip of sand around Haeundae has become Korea`s most popular beach. During summer vacation, especially on weekends, the area becomes a wall of humanity. Even during the colder seasons, people flock here to walk along the boardwalk, fly kites in the ocean breeze, and look for shells in the sand. According to legend, Choi Chi-won passed by Haeundae on his way to Mt.Gaya to give up his government position and was fascinated with the exquisite wonders of Dongbaek Island. He set up camp and called the area "Haeundae" after his pen name of "Hae-un."
Neighboring Haeundae are a hot spring, Dongbaek Island, the Oryuk Islets, The Moon-viewing Road, and Cheongsapo (a raw fish restaurant), Olympia Park, the yachting center and so forth, joined to form a complex sight-seeing belt. Haeundae continues to grow and improve with cultural and artistic events and festivals yearly. With the Haeundae Under-Sea Theme Aquarium under construction, Haeundae¡¯s role as a Korean tourism Mecca is assured.
